[Meanwhile... In an alternate universe where Plugg was NOT conveniently killed by a snek...]

-

Kurda shifted her weight from one paw to the other as she licked the tips of her sharp teeth, approaching her opponent in a half circle and staring right at him with her red eyes, her saber raised, poised to strike.

Plugg watched her approach, and though his posture did not demonstrate any of the quivering fear Kurda was used to seeing in the slaves back at Riftgard, she vowed to herself that she would now put that same quivering terror into this insolent fox before he died! She grinned broadly as she looked forward to taking him apart piece by piece...

After throwing what she felt was a clever feint, Kurda leapt forward and took a swing, intending to lop off one of Plugg's ears, only to find the pirate behaved exactly like a root vegetable, thrown lazily underhand ('thrown properly' as Kurda called it), wouldn't have behaved. Plugg after all could MOVE.

Now Plugg Firetail and his crew were perhaps not the most fearsome pirates to ever sail the sea, and it had to be admitted... the best sort of piracy generally involved helpless terrified victims, to be sure. But nonetheless, not only did victims sometimes fight back. (And thus would Plugg have, had he had no fighting skills whatsoever, long been dead at their hands.) He also never would have risen to become the captain of his crew without any combat skills either. So when Kurda threw a wild swing at his face Plugg twisted his body slightly and immediately countered the reckless and easily read attack.

Kurda's frequent physical excersize had given her some upper body strength, but the blow of the fox' axe against her saber still hit her with an amount of force she did not at all expect, and she was not prepared for it. The fact that the fox was larger then her and male had allowed him to put more muscle into the blow then Kurda had been able to put into her own. And so Kurda's sword arm flew back involuntarily as she almost lost her balance, reeling from the counter. And before she could bring her saber back in front of her Plugg's fist had already collided with her nose, as the pirate immediately took advantage of her dropped guard.

Kurda spat angrily, part of her felt that an attack like this was cheating! Only by sheer luck did she at all keep any amount of balance this time. And only by a cold burst of panic did she manage to tightly hold onto her saber. Even so, before she fully opened her eyes again she heard and felt a loud crack and stars exploded behind her eyes as Plugg had swung the flat of his axe against the side of her head with both arms, putting the entire force of his weight into the strike as his crew (Who, had they all backed up their captain could have killed the ferret very quickly, a possibility Kurda had not quite considered in her master plan.) cheered. Kurda wasn't even entirely aware of slamming into the ground until a full second after she hit it... hard.

Her complete lack of actual real combat training having brutally caught up with her, Kurda, now panicking, tried to launch herself upward to wildly slash at wherever she thought Plugg was, but before her saber completed it's arc or she made it fully back to her feet, the sole of Plugg's boot hit her square in the nose, and this time as she fell backward she did drop her blade, which Plugg quickly stepped on.

"Well then lass..." The fox chuckled "Seems like the terms of our deal have changed just now, haven't they?"

Kurda dizzily rolled onto her belly and half sat up, one paw trying to stem the flow of blood from her nose as she checked with her tongue to see if she still had all her teeth. Her eyes stared at the pirate with pure burning hatred. If only briefly, as the realization of how much trouble she was in quickly caught up with her, and her hateful look increasingly turned into fear.

"Where did ye learn to fight anyway princess?" Plugg snorted, relaxing his posture. "In the kitchen, choppin' vegetables?"

He had no idea how true his taunt actually was.

While surely there were opponents in the world for whom defeating the likes of Plugg Firetail would be an easy enough task, training consisting exclusively of chopping up vegetables in mid air had not been anywhere enough to make Kurda of Riftgard one of them. And she was not enjoying this harsh reality check in the slightest. Though she did not know it yet, the experience of being the female captive of a band of pirates was probably not going to be much more of a lift to her mood either.

This was after all a universe in which other vermin pirates, for the fun of it, might just throw their victims into the sea, sown up into a bag of rocks. Or where deranged elderly squirrels in turn would sneakily capture young warriors from vermin tribes to skin them alive whilst they screamed in vain for mercy.
